Sarah Silverman says she’s “lucky to be alive” after spending last week in the ICU for a life-threatening condition called epiglottitis.
“Don’t even know why I went to the doctor, it was just a sore throat,” she wrote on Facebook on Wednesday, “But I had a freak case of epiglottitis.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, epiglottitis occurs when a piece of small cartilage that covers the windpipe swells and blocks air from getting into the lungs. It can cause respiratory failure.
“There’s something that happens when three people you’re so close to die within a year and then YOU almost die but don’t. (That was me. I’m the one that didn’t die.),” she said. “It’s a strange dichotomy between, ‘Why me?’ and the other, ‘Why me?’”
Silverman says she woke up five days after her procedure with no memory of what happened.
She thanked the doctors and nurses at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for saving her life and also noted how her friends, family and beau Michael Sheen were there to take care of her.
Of course the comedian couldn’t end the post without a few funny tales from the hospital. It looks like she’s in recovery mode.
